Plastic Surgery Treatment - Overview

A Cosmetic Surgery is a type of plastic surgery that aims to improve a person’s appearance, but it should be approached with caution. The procedures for a cosmetic surgery are available for almost any part of the body, but the choice to undergo cosmetic surgery should not be taken lightly. The results of such surgeries are often permanent, so it is important to be sure about the decision, to use an appropriate practitioner, and to have the right motivation. A Cosmetic surgeon may refer a patient for counselling before he/she undergoes the surgery if they believe there is an underlying problem that cannot be solved by the surgery, or if the patient shows signs of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

BDD can cause a person to perceive that there is something seriously wrong with his/her appearance, when objective evidence suggests otherwise.

Reconstructive Surgery is another type of plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery. It aims to improve function and to give a normal appearance to a part of the person’s body that has been damaged, for example, after a mastectomy.

Plastic Surgery Treatment - Symptoms

Cosmetic Surgery can bring lasting and dramatic changes to the outside appearance of a person, it is important to understand how these changes may affect you on the inside. There are no particular symptoms that can be seen for a plastic surgery but the patient should see a cosmetic surgeon and consider the motives for wanting to change how they look before making an appointment. Many physical characteristics can be successfully changed after the cosmetic surgery; others cannot.

Plastic Surgery Treatment - Pre-Procedure

During the very first meeting, the cosmetic surgeon will explain how cosmetic surgery can change the body and what the patient can expect as a result. This is an opportunity for the patient to explain what he/she is hoping to achieve with surgery. Understanding the options and possible outcomes will help the patient to make the best decision. The Patient is informed about the specific procedures, what to expect, the benefits, risks and possible complications, as well as other alternatives. The Physician may also recommend additional procedures to enhance the overall result.

Plastic Surgery Treatment - During Procedure

Cosmetic Surgery procedures requiring general anesthesia or IV (intravenous) sedation are performed in the hospital under the care of an anesthesiologist/nurse anesthetist team. Others procedures may include injections of facial fillers, may be performed in an outpatient setting or physician’s office under local anesthesia. Prior to surgery, you will see the surgeon (or a member of your health care team) one more time to answer any remaining questions.

Plastic Surgery Treatment - Post-Procedure

Prior to outpatient surgery or before discharge from the hospital, you will receive:

  • Instructions for post-surgical care specific to your procedure
  • Medication instructions and prescriptions (for example, for pain medications and antibiotics)
  • Phone numbers to call for questions

Plastic Surgery Treatment - Risk & Complications

All Surgeries, including cosmetic procedures, carry some risks and complications. The patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, lung disease, diabetes or obesity have a higher risk of developing complications such as pneumonia, stroke, heart attack or blood clots in the legs or lungs after cosmetic surgery. Smoking also increases risks and interferes with healing.

Possible complications for any surgical procedure may include:

  • Complications related to anesthesia, including pneumonia, blood clots and, rarely, death
  • Infection in the area where the incision is made, which may worsen scarring and require additional surgery
  • Fluid build up under the skin
  • Gentle bleeding, which may require another surgical procedure, or bleeding significant enough to require a transfusion
  • Obvious scarring or skin breakdown, which may occur when healing skin separates from the healthy skin and must be removed surgically
  • Numbness and tingling from nerve damage which may be permanent in some cases
