IVF Treatment - Overview

IVF or In Vitro Fertilization treatment is an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) that is the process of fertilization by extracting eggs, retrieving a male sperm sample, and then manually combining an Egg and Sperm in a laboratory dish. After that the embryo(s) is then transferred to the uterus. Other forms of ART include gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer (GIFT) and Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer (ZIFT).

IVF Treatment - Symptoms

IVF treatment is considered in the following cases:

  • Blocked or damaged Fallopian tubes
  • Male factor infertility including low sperm count or sperm motility
  • Women having ovulation disorders like premature ovarian failure, uterine fibroid
  • Women who got their Fallopian tubes removed
  • Individuals with a genetic disorder
  • Unexplained infertility

IVF Treatment - Pre-Procedure

Before going for an IVF treatment and choosing an in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic, you should keep in mind that a clinic’s success rate depends on several factors, like the patients’ age and medical issues, as well as the clinic’s treatment population and treatment approaches. You should ask your doctor for detailed information about the costs associated with each step of the procedure.

Before the actual procedure of IVF using your own eggs and sperm, you and your partner will likely need to undergo various screenings, including:

  • Ovarian Reserve Testing
  • Semen Analysis
  • Infectious Disease Screening
  • Practice (Mock) Embryo Transfer
  • Uterine Exam

IVF Treatment - During Procedure

In an IVF treatment and embryo transfer there are five basic steps that take place:

Step 1: In the first step the patient is prescribed some fertility medications to stimulate egg production. Multiple eggs are required because some eggs will not develop or fertilize after retrieval. A transvaginal ultrasound is done to examine the ovaries, and blood test samples are taken to check hormone levels.

Step 2: In the second step the eggs are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure that uses ultrasound imaging to guide a hollow needle through the pelvic cavity to remove the eggs of the patient. Medication is also provided to the patient to reduce and remove potential discomfort.

Step 3: The male is then asked to produce a sample of sperm, which is prepared then for combining with the eggs.

Step 4: Then insemination is performed in which the sperm and eggs are mixed together and stored in a laboratory dish to encourage fertilization. In some cases where there is a lower chance of fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is also performed. In an ICSI procedure, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg in an attempt to achieve fertilization. The eggs are then monitored to confirm that fertilization and cell division are taking place. Once this process is completed, the fertilized eggs are considered embryos.

Step 5: The embryos are usually transferred into the woman’s uterus three to five days after the egg retrieval and fertilization. A catheter or small tube is inserted into the patient’s uterus to transfer the embryos. This procedure is painless for most of the women, although some may experience mild cramping during the whole procedure. If the procedure is successful, implantation typically takes around six to ten days following egg retrieval.

IVF Treatment - Post-Procedure

Once the embryo transfer is done successfully, you can resume normal daily activities. However, in some cases ovaries may still be enlarged. You should avoid vigorous activity, which could cause discomfort. If you develop any kind of pain moderate or severe after the embryo transfer, you should immediately contact your doctor. Your doctor will evaluate you for complications such as infection, twisting of an ovary (ovarian torsion) and severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

IVF Treatment - Risk & Complications

As with most medical procedures, there are potential risks as well. Some of the typical risks that are associated with an IVF treatment may include the following:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Decreased urinary frequency
  • Shortness of breath
  • Faintness
  • Severe stomach pains and bloating
  • Sudden weight gain within three to five days

If you experience any of the above symptoms,  you should contact your doctor right away.
