Abdominoplasty Treatment - Overview

Abdominoplasty also known as tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the abdomen. In this procedure a surgeon removes the excess skin and fat from the abdomen. Other connective tissue in the abdomen (fascia) usually is tightened with sutures as well. The remaining skin is then repositioned to create a more toned look that can improve the appearance of a person.

A person may choose to have a tummy tuck or an Abdominoplasty surgery if he/she has excess fat or skin around the area of bellybutton or a weak lower abdominal wall. A tummy tuck can also help in boosting body image.

Abdominoplasty Treatment - Symptoms

There are a several reasons you might have excess fat, poor elasticity of the skin or weakened connective tissue in your abdomen. These include:

  • Significant changes in weight
  • Pregnancy
  • Abdominal surgery, such as a C-section
  • Aging
  • Your natural body type

Abdominoplasty Treatment - Pre-Procedure

Once you decide to have an Abdominoplasty surgery you’ll have to talk to a plastic surgeon about the surgery. During your first visit, your plastic surgeon will likely review your medical history; you will have to tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medications. If your desire for a tummy tuck is related to weight loss, your doctor will likely ask some detailed questions about your weight gain and loss. Your doctor will also conduct a physical exam to determine your treatment options and examine your abdomen. Your doctor might also take pictures of your abdomen for your medical record.

Before a tummy tuck surgery you might also need to:

  • Stop smoking
  • Avoid certain medications
  • Maintain a stable weight
  • Take medication to prevent complications
  • Arrange for help during recovery

Abdominoplasty Treatment - During Procedure

During the surgery you will get general anesthesia, which will put you to “sleep” during the operation. The treatment is done by removing the excess skin and fat from the abdomen. It can take anywhere from one to five hours for the treatment to get over. You may need to spend a whole night in the hospital, depending on your case.

Abdominoplasty Treatment - Post-Procedure

Post tummy tuck surgery, your abdominal incision and bellybutton will likely be covered with surgical dressing. To drain any excess blood or fluid small tubes might be placed along the incision site. Your doctor will help you walk as early as the first day after a tummy tuck to help prevent the formation of blood clots. You might feel moderate pain, which will be controlled by pain medication. You can also experience swelling in the surgical area. Drains might be left in place for some days after the surgery. You might need to continue taking an antibiotic till the drains are in place. Your surgeon might also prescribe a blood-thinning medication for a short time after the surgery.

You will have to wear a supportive abdominal garment (abdominal binder) for about six weeks after the surgery as it helps prevent fluid buildup and provides abdominal support while you heal. Your doctor will also explain you how to take care for your scar.

For the first six weeks after the surgery, you’ll need to be careful when moving around. You’ll also need to avoid any positions that strain your incision line — such as quickly bending at the waist to prevent the reopening of the wound.

You’ll need to schedule regular follow-up visits to your doctor until the drains disappear.

Abdominoplasty Treatment - Risk & Complications

A tummy tuck poses various risks that may include

  • Fluid accumulation beneath the skin (Seroma)
  • Poor wound healing
  • Unexpected scarring
  • Tissue damage or death
  • Changes in skin sensation

Like any other type of major surgery, an Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck poses a risk of bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to anesthesia.
