Colon Cancer Treatment - Overview

Colon cancer also called colorectal cancer; it is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the colon or the rectum in a person’s body. Colon Cancer is a serious disease not to be taken lightly and one should take precautions. Treatment for colon cancer is also based largely on the stage (extent) of the cancer, but other factors can also be important. People with colon cancers that have not spread to distant sites usually have surgery as the main or first treatment for Colon cancer. Chemo may also be used in some cases after the surgery (called adjuvant treatment).

Colon Cancer Treatment - Symptoms

There may often no signs in the early stage of the colon cancer but signs and symptoms may develop as the cancer advances. Some of the common symptoms may include blood in the stool or a change in bowel habits, pain in the rectal and pelvis and abdomen regions, bowel obstruction, constipation, blood in the urine or stool, diarrhea, gas, anemia, severe weight loss, loss of appetite, lumps in the abdomen, weight loss, and fatigue. If one has any of these symptoms of colon cancer, it is advisable to visit a doctor at the earliest and get proper medical attention.

Colon Cancer Treatment - Pre-Procedure

Your doctor will recommend certain screening tests for healthy people with no signs or symptoms in order to determine the signs of colon cancer or noncancerous colon polyps. Finding colon cancer at its earliest stage offer the greatest chance to cure the cancer. Screening has been shown to reduce the risk of dying of colon cancer.

Colon Cancer Treatment - During Procedure

The treatment for colon cancer depends on the stage of the colon cancer. Following procedures are performed in different stages:

Surgery
Procedure for removal of the tumor and some surrounding healthy tissue during an operation is called surgical resection. It is one of the most common treatments for colorectal cancer. Parts of the healthy colon or rectum and nearby lymph nodes are also removed in this procedure.

Chemo
Chemo is a treatment that is generally performed to treat cancer that has spread through the use of  drugs/ medicines that travel through the whole body. It is the use of drugs to remove and destroy the cancer cells, usually by ending the cancer cells’ ability to grow and divide. Chemo may be given after the surgery to remove any remaining cancer cells. In some cases, the doctor will give chemo and radiation before surgery to people with rectal cancer,  to reduce the size of a rectal tumor and reduce the chance of the cancer returning.

Radio
Radiation also called Radio usually used for the treatment of cancer during the later stage; it is the use of high-energy x-rays to destroy cancer cells. Radiation is commonly used for treating rectal cancer because this tumor tends to recur near where it originally started; it is a preventive radiation treatment which focuses intense energy rays on the cancer cells in hopes of destroying them
